  • Essay / Teacher Proposal to Improve Student Transition to...

The most immediate issue to address at Passages Middle School is student transition to our program. Currently, there is only one set of forms providing only contact information and signed releases. I propose implementing a process that would define from the outset the goals and targets that we as a team (student, teacher, parent, home district) must work toward to meet the future educational needs of students . I think the transition into our program is the key to the transition out of our program. If we know from the outset what the most critical issues to work on are and if we get buy-in from all stakeholders, especially the student, there will be a better chance of the student returning successfully in his original school. During my tenure, I sometimes felt like our program was being used as a warehouse for kids who had burned out on their teachers, their administrators, and potentially the student themselves. While I appreciate the idea that a student can be successful in a new environment, I think it is wise to be more intentional in the process by which we identify goals and move forward. I know some students are with me the entire time. These students need a smaller class size and a consistent relationship with a single teacher. However, I think if we truly want to serve the best interests of even those students who are with us long term, we need to think about what needs to happen for that student to transition to high school.Relationship with alternative educationTransition with a The goal is part of an overall alternative education program because of the emphasis on getting the student back on track so they are less likely to have problems in high school ....... middle of paper ...... ambitious plan that makes a student's success the goal in a more meaningful way. I recently held a special education baseline meeting for one of my students who was in the class before I arrived. I heard part of his story for the first time. I heard about his problems at home. Each piece of information would and will be very important to me as I work to help this student learn to deal with some of his problems. However, most importantly, we discussed goals to work on for his success and eventual return to his home school. I worked with this student for two months and finally agreed on set goals with all the important parties present for the student's success, including the student himself. How much more beneficial could the student's experience have been over the past two months if we had implemented a transition with a specific purpose.
