What is personal responsibility? Here are some examples that people would probably come up with: working, doing household chores, taking care of family and some might even say going to school and getting a better education. The definition of personal responsibility is: the obligation to carry out an assigned task successfully. With responsibility comes the authority to lead and take the necessary actions to ensure success. ("DOD Dictionary of Military and Related Terms"). To me, personal responsibility is taking ownership of things that will affect us in any way, whether long term or short term. If we do not take ownership of the situations around us, we will be burdened with duties and missions which will then become a task and no longer just a responsibility. College is a personal responsibility for all of us. In order to take control of our lives and have the options we desire, college is the path most of us will have to take. Succeeding in our studies and obtaining the highest level of education possible will open doors for us to provide for those we care about most in our lives. This will allow us to live our dreams with multiple options to choose from, which is why we worked so hard and decided to go to school. According to “10 Incredibly Successful People Who Went to Community College” (2012), “Nolan D. Archibald, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Black & Decker Corporation, was once one of the youngest CEOs of a company Fortune 500 and has been celebrated by the American Marketing Association, Business Week, and Fortune as one of the nation's most successful and sought-after business executives… Archibald graduated from Dixie Junior College” (7).
