    The history of the United States is made up of countless heroic individuals who have made this country what it is and what it represents today. Some of the most influential people have come from the line of presidents who have led America through the best of times and the worst of times. Thanks to their dedication, inspiration and desire to improve their lives and the lives of those around them, our world today has truly changed. Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson are just two of the monumental leaders who have had a lasting impact on this nation's history. By researching their lives before the presidency, during their years of service, and their contributions afterward, people around the world are able to better understand who these men really were. On February 12, 1809, in Harding County, Kentucky, a baby boy named Abraham Lincoln was delivered. Unknown to him and his family, this small individual would eventually become one of the most influential leaders in the United States. As a child, Lincoln lived an average life. He attended school when it was available and worked constantly to support his family. He never showed much interest in politics or foreshadowed the important political title he would one day hold. Lincoln transported goods down the Mississippi River, worked as a trader, served as postmaster, and became a lawyer. Over the years, Lincoln became actively involved in local politics. Stronger support for the Whig Party became evident as its contribution and interest in government increased. In 1834, he ran for political office in the Illinois State Legislature.
