Research suggests that premature births in the African American community are common due to race-related stress during or before pregnancy. The Stress of Racism May Cause Premature Births in Black Moms was published by Janet Taylor on November 23, 2009. Taylor wrote this article from an academic perspective. She believes other African American women should be aware of the impact race-related stress can have on the fetus. Data Assessment: Statistics: More than 540,000 babies are born too early, African American women at all socioeconomic levels have higher rates of prematurity. of births and infant mortality, educated African American women have a premature birth rate of 12 per 1,000 births. Taylor suggests that chronic racism over the life course of African American women affects their birth outcomes. This research would be considered both qualitative and quantitative, as quality of life can affect an individual's birth outcome. Conclusion: I plan to use this research to argue that premature birth among African American women has a direct correlation with race. stress. Surveys of the massive female population have asked race-related questions such as: How often do we think about our race in our daily lives? How many different races did we interact with growing up? How often do we compare ourselves to other races? In asking these questions, depending on the answers, it may be safe to imply that many premature births to African American women are associated with race-related stress.
