Essay / The effects of passive smoking - 730
Did you know that in 2011, there were more than 6 million deaths caused by tobacco worldwide (Henningfield)? Smoking is the act of inhaling and exhaling the vapors of burning plant material. Because there is nicotine in cigarettes, they are highly addictive. Cigarettes are one of the most devastating causes of death and disease in the world (Henningfield). Passive smoking has many negative effects, both immediate and long-term. Smoking also negatively affects the indoor environment. Additionally, when pregnant women or parents of young children smoke, they could harm their children. People should not smoke around other people because they are exposed to harmful chemicals and they are not the ones putting themselves at risk. There are many negative effects on passive smokers, both immediately and over time. Second-hand smokers absorb nicotine and toxic chemicals through the same route as smokers, except they don't have a filter. The more toxic chemicals smokers consume, the more likely they are to absorb harmful chemicals into their bodies (“second-hand smoke”). So, smoking with other people around you is the cause of many problems that they may have throughout their life. Second-hand smoke immediately affects the heart, blood vessels and circulation in a harmful way (“second-hand smoke”), it puts nicotine into their blood and could cause them to become addicted to cigarettes before they even smoke. Over time, heart disease, strokes and heart attacks can occur. Some people also get lung cancer or other types of cancer (“second-hand smoke”). When smoking with other people, you might end up killing people without even trying. Not only is smoking bad for our bodies, but it's also bad for the environment. Not middle of paper......smokers. Smokers expose people to harmful chemicals and toxins that should be avoided whenever possible. Passive smokers can be adults or children, but on average, more children are exposed to second-hand smoke than non-smoking adults (“second-hand smoke”). The effects of smoking and second-hand smoke on people are shocking and terrible, but they could all be avoided or less common if people simply stopped smoking or were more careful about smoking away from others. People should not smoke around other people because it exposes them to harmful chemicals and they are not the ones putting themselves in danger. Works Cited “Air Pollution” Britannica School.
