The United States overthrew 14 countries in about a century. They started with Hawaii (1893) and ended with Iraq (2003). They used force (troops) and the CIA to overthrow the country. The first era (the Imperial Era) was brought about by the economic interests of the United States and they used military power to invade territories. The second and third eras (the Cold War era and the era of invasions) had mainly communist and also economic factors. The Cold War era used the CIA to overthrow foreign governments. The era of invasions used American troops to overthrow governments. The United States has always taken care of American companies established on foreign territory and acted against communist or pro-communist governments. It even went so far as to kill the people they put in power in foreign governments if they began to display pro-communist views. Hawaii was the only country in the Imperial Era that wanted to be annexed to the United States while still under its country's rule. Queen Liliuokalani. One day, Queen Liliuokalani forced the United States to focus its attention on Hawaiian territory. Queen Liliuokalani announced a "new constitution" under which only Hawaiian citizens would have the right to vote. Queen Liliuokalani was trying to regain Hawaiian political power. This decision worried the U.S. Minister to Hawaii, John L. Stevens, because of all the U.S. investment in Hawaii. John Colburn, Hawaii's Minister of the Interior, rushed to alert his friend Lorrin Thurston, an arsonist lawyer and anti-royalist plotter. John Stevens and Lorrin Thurston were bonded with one thing in mind: to overthrow Queen Liliuokalani. The Security Committee (Lorrin Thurston was the leader and included other government officials) signed the annex...... middle of paper ...... in Honduras. The United States government was aware of Sam Zemurray's intentions and was not supposed to act unless the coup began on American soil (which it did not). Sam Zemurray assembled a team consisting of Lee Christmas (leader), George "Machine Gun" Molony (shooter), Manuel Bonilla (Zemurray's future president-elect) and Florian Davadi (Bonilla's chief assistant). Lee Christmas has taken over a Honduran town. The United States was negotiating an agreement with the Honduran president to prevent Lee Christmas and his partners from continuing their actions. After negotiations failed, the United States ordered an end to the fighting (the Honduran government was unable to fight Lee Christmas). This caused the president to resign. Bonilla eventually took over the presidency a year later after negotiating with the United States and rewarded Zemurray with land and benefits..
