I had never thought about the difference between equality of opportunity and equality of circumstance. I've always heard everyone talk about equality, but before reading Dr. Deaton's book, I had never thought about the roots of equality. No one faces the same circumstances, but in general, to get something, you have to work. I believe that in most cases, if you want equality of opportunity, you have to create it yourself. For example, I love sports, everything related to it. People come from all kinds of backgrounds and circumstances because they have all worked hard enough to create the opportunity to play at a competitive level. To get to the MLB/NBA/NFL, there is no minimum salary for parents or minimum education level, just athletes who have risen above their circumstances. However, I believe that differences in circumstances can be a major cause of inequality. For example, my older sister and I went to the same high school where if you want to learn something, sometimes you have to learn it yourself because the curriculum wasn't difficult and athletics were valued more than the academics. Because of my family's disapproval of my high school and my father's new job, my younger brother is now able to attend the local private school whose scores exceed those of my high school. My brother, in the long run, will have greater opportunities than my sister or I because of the education he will receive based on our family's progress and not because he has surpassed my sister and I in work .
