  • Essay / Edward Zigler and Howard Gardner - 901

In pursuing the education and experience that will lead us to our chosen profession, it is important, even vital, that we carefully choose a path that will will lead to where we want to go. As we travel this path, we will most likely encounter obstacles or opportunities that will take us in different directions, perhaps leaving us at the end of the path in a very different place than where we started. Like us, Edward Zigler and Howard Gardner embarked on career paths that ended in very different places than they anticipated, both for very different reasons. Edward Zigler initially wanted to pursue a career in a purely scientific field, preferably in a laboratory or in actual field work. He reluctantly joined the ranks of what would become Project Head Start in 1964 because of his deep sense of patriotism and said he felt “conscripted” again (Zigler, 2003). Zigler felt like he was mistakenly chosen for the job. Reluctantly, Zigler was pushed into the role of administrator, away from his chosen path as a field scientist, and became part of the establishment he fought so hard against in his youth . The unexpected and rather positive result of his work in this capacity was that Zigler was able to combine his practical experience in the field with his authority as an administrator to meet the needs of the fledgling program and expand it far beyond expectations of its founders. Ultimately, Zigler was able to achieve the best of both worlds in a career he never chose. Far from receiving well-deserved praise for his accomplishments, Zigler became the target of criticism from both sides. The administrators had no respect for him because of his youth, his scientific background......middle of document......ng and his remembrance which provides additional insight into how and why the Students can learn better, faster and easier when the correct learning style is provided to them. Gardner is also the co-director of Project Zero, which, like him, encompasses and continues to create such a variety of projects that even a longtime student like Howard Gardner can find something to entertain his mind and fully engaged curiosity.
