Essay / Gender Roles and Marriage in Chekhov's The Proposal...
In the following essay, I will compare and contrast the gender roles and marriage between Anton Chekhov's "The Proposal" and Anton Chekhov's "Country Lovers." Nadine Gordimer to show how women tried to survive by controlling their identities. This essay will compare and contrast each of the characters used by two very different writers. The early 1900s were not kind to people in their struggle for what they were trying to accomplish with their lives. Nadine Gordimer was born in 1923 in Africa. She opposes the opposition that black people in Africa face and emphasizes this point in her writings. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991. Anton Chekhov was also famous for Russia's Pushkin Prize in 1888 and, like Gordimer, he also wrote many short stories, but occasionally ventured into the theater with several plays of theater. Both writers lived abroad and shared the use of conflict in their writing, such as unrealistic expectations, endowment, and social status. They used the symbolism more as a contrast than a comparison, but compared lower class versus upper class status for each of their characters in the two short stories that will be featured in this article. In Gordimer's article titled “Twenty-One Year Later,” she states that “since 1980, other media have succeeded print media as the most powerful means of free expression. I still remain totally opposed to censorship, but I am in a dilemma when I press the wrong button on a television and find myself confronted by a couple playing Shakespeare's "two-backed beast" in a truly beastly and violent sexual display. it could certainly scare off any of the many children left to have fun playing on the TV station keyboard.
