  • Essay / Knowledge, questioning, and discovery are what lead...

In CS Lewis's essays Learning in War and Living in the Atomic Age, there is a recurring theme. The theme displayed in both essays was to not get distracted in times of crisis and to continue living. Lewis believes in overcoming the threats facing this world. Working and living in this era consists of acting to the maximum of one's humanist potential. The humanistic acts that Lewis believes one should adhere to are enjoying life, seeking knowledge, questioning everything, and discovering the power of the “Creator,” God. Following God's path will lead us to a fulfilling life that ends when He is ready for us in His kingdom. God's Divine Providence is what sustains our natural world. One must ignore the threats of life and concentrate on the Divine Providence of God. According to Lewis, it is important to seek knowledge even in times of struggle and crisis. This was an important point of the Learning in War Time essay. The mission to seek knowledge is one of our duties and as Lewis says, “every duty is a religious duty, and our obligation to perform every duty is therefore absolute.” (Lewis 9) By saying this, we reinforce the idea that the pursuit of knowledge is our duty and is necessary to live according to God's Divine Providence. To achieve the fulfilling life God intended for each of us, we must strive to achieve all that we are capable of. The culture one creates by seeking knowledge creates a greater duty than when one simply gives up. A less extreme form of this might be that of a student. Students experience a lot of self-inflicted stress and anxiety. The difficult times one goes through with the workload could be their own crisis. Instead of the student feeling overworked, causing them to skip classes or drop out. Some...... middle of paper...... God and our planned routes. It requires the ability to ignore the threats that cause us to give up and live a life dedicated to God's Divine Providence. The two essays together give us a formula for achieving a life devoted to God and the plans He has for us. We are to enjoy life by seeking knowledge, questioning life, and discovering God and the journey He has planned. The threats we face in life should not hold us back, we must move on and maintain the life we are lucky to have. We must focus on dealing with calamities and on our true mission with God. There will never be a time in life where there is no struggle or trial. Dwelling on these constant difficulties will never help us, we must continue to fulfill our duties. Lewis has a view on life that I agree with. I agree that all our duties are religious duties and help us get closer to God..
