Obesity in the United States is increasingly cited as a major health problem. Results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey show that the proportion of obese adults more than doubled, from 15% in 1971-1974 to 34% in 2003-2006 for adults aged 20 to 74. In 1990, obese adults made up less than 15 percent of the population in most U.S. states, but by 2010, 36 states had obesity rates of 25 percent or more and 12 of those states had a rate of obesity of 30 percent or more (CDCP 2012).Cutler et al. (2006) suggest that the increase in food consumption caused by falling food costs is the main cause of the rise in obesity since 1980.
