The Ku Klux Klan was a white supremacist organization that emerged from the Civil War. The group's methods evolved over time, but the primary goal was to promote white power by threatening minorities. After the end of the Civil War in 1865, the Ku Klux Klan was formed. It was created in 1865 by six students as a joke and pure fun and not with the intention of becoming a white supremacist group. However, once the group gained widespread popularity and a growing number of followers, the group's philosophy changed. The group began targeting and harassing African Americans, but without resorting to violence. Over time, however, the group changed its treatment of African Americans and began harassing them with extreme violence. The Klan was not alone in its practices and many other discriminatory groups were forming at this time. The groups decided to meet with the Klan and joined forces to collectively draft a constitution. They also elected a central leader named Nathan Bedford Forrest, his title as Grand Wizard. As the group grew, the Klan began to divide into subgroups. It was a hierarchy starting with the Grand Wizard at the top of the chain and the Ghouls at the bottom. The Klan evolved into a stricter group over time, but was still populated by irresponsible civilians. The group presents itself as vigilantes and enforcers of the law. The Klan had a police force, a justice system, and, if necessary, executioners. The group felt that it positively affected American society. At this point, violence was used, but very rarely. Although this plan seemed good, Andrew Johnson lost power before he could implement it. So the last plan was that of Congress, this plan ratified the Fourteenth Amendment. Its goal was to protect the civil rights of all Americans, regardless of race. He also created the Military Reconstruction Act of 1867, which divided the South into five military districts. It also passed the Fifteenth Amendment, which prohibits any state from denying the right to vote on racial grounds. This amendment was aimed directly at eradicating black codes in the South. All of these revisions angered the South, but no one was angrier than the Klan. The Ku Klux Klan was extremely angry with the newly rebuilt government.
