  • Essay / The Importance of Nursing in American Culture - 1306

The Importance of Nursing in American Culture Nursing is a field of work that fascinates many people and commands a certain amount of respect. We look at nurses with a sense of admiration and respect, and we rely on them for their safety in times of need. What makes nursing such a desirable and exciting field for others? Although doctors are usually in the spotlight, nursing is of paramount importance in American culture. Nurses provide comfort and safety, as well as knowledge of medical assistance. The field of nursing has the advantage of coming from an ancient, yet timeless, field that has flourished throughout history and had a significant impact on our culture today. The role of a nurse in our society today is exceptionally important. Nurses are somewhat idolized and seen as our everyday “superman.” “The mission of nursing in society is to help individuals, families and groups determine and realize their physical, mental and social potential, and to do so within the challenging context of the environment in which they live and work” (“The role of a nurse/midwife”). Many Americans look to nurses for the provision of primary health care and health education services (Whelan). In our country, there is always someone in need of health care. There will always be a baby born or a person who dies, a person who gets sick or grows old. Some people, due to their physical and/or mental health condition, are completely dependent on a nurse and would not be able to overcome the simple obstacles of each day or accomplish the necessary demands of a simple day without their help. Not only do nurses help and assist you when you are sick, but they also act to promote the good health of others. They end...... middle of paper ......s or concerns” (Campbell). The profound importance of nursing in our culture begins with the little people and the forgotten importance of the school nurse.
