  • Essay / The Autobiography of Malcolm X and the Hiding Place of...

The books I chose to read were The Autobiography of Malcolm and Corrie's The Hiding Place ten boom. I read Malcolm X because I wanted to know the differences between the book and the movie. I read The Autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi to get clarification on some things I learned about him in class. I read The Hiding Place because I was very interested in its story. I want to focus mainly on “The Hiding Place” because it helped me learn more about Nazi Germany. When this topic is discussed in class, the focus is usually on Adolf Hitler or the diary of Anne Frank. I have never heard of Nazi Germany from any other perspective. The whole book intrigued me. There was nothing I didn't like. To say that I didn't like something about it would be ignorant, because it is about someone's life experiences and I read it to gain knowledge about their experience. From the description of his house, to his deceased aunts and mother, to the scripture reading they do every morning at 8:30 a.m., I felt like I was part of the story. They were a real family, and few families spent time together in the old fashioned way like they did. I loved the young love she developed for her brothers' friend, Karel. “But you’re so…so grown-up.” Forgive me, Corrie, of course you are! It's just that I always thought of you as the little girl with the huge blue eyes. He looked at me a little longer, then added softly, "And now the little girl is a lady and a lovely person." Seeing her fall in love with him as a young child and seeing them meet when they are both older really touched me because her crush on him never died. ...... middle of paper ...... this is Corrie's way of guiding Corrie in the right direction by saying that she was mistakenly allowed to leave the prison when she was supposed to be sent to the gas chamber with everyone else who was her age. Plus, the bottle of pills she'd swiped for Betsie and allowed the others to use as well never seemed to have gone missing, as if it was always full. It felt like miracles, which is why Corrie never stopped moving forward, no matter what. Corrie felt like God's messenger, and she spread the message to all the Jews who were wondering how to forgive those who were in charge of all this. “The Hiding Place” was a very powerful story. It was nice to read the story of a woman who had an impact on so many people's lives. I enjoyed reliving his life, although quite tragic, through the book. It was a learning experience that I will appreciate and keep in mind for the rest of my years..
