  • Essay / Composites and materials used in aircraft - 544

There are different materials that can be used on aircraft. Composite and alloy materials are the main components used due to the possibility of combining certain materials of different strengths to create a composite or alloy. These possess ultimate properties necessary to create an aircraft that can be used safely when applied. Composites are used because of their extremely high strength to weight ratio, although using large quantities of metals can be strong, unlike composites it would be too heavy. Composites are essentially designed to create a lighter aircraft that, over a long period of time, would be more profitable for the company operating the aircraft, due to fuel savings. Materials used in aircraft range from metal alloys such as aluminum-lithium alloys and many other different aluminum alloys, for example; 2024, 2090, each possessing desirable properties that lead it to be used in industry. To composites which can range from carbon composites to graphite, aramid, fiberglass. These can also be used together to create graphite-aramid, graphite-aramid-fiberglass, graphite-fiberglass....
