    An Anglo-Saxon epic poem, Beowulf, which was originally transmitted through oral tradition during the 5th century, was written down in alphabetical by an unknown Christian monk in the 10th century. This classic poem explicitly illustrates an ideal Anglo-Saxon hero possessing the characteristics that many people valued at that time. Beowulf is the embodiment of an ideal Anglo-Saxon hero who is loyal to both his people and his king, desires to gain glory and fame for his own recognition rather than his riches, and believes devotedly in his destiny and his faith in God. “Comitatus,” a sense of loyalty and responsibility within a group, was a very important ideology in Anglo-Saxon society. Beowulf embodies an ideal Anglo-Saxon hero who fully possesses the characteristics of loyalty; So on, his loyalty to his leaders and followers can be critically seen by readers through the many acts of the poem. Before Beowulf leaves King Hrothgar's lands, he says: "...in your honor, summon me, I will come as I came once before, if I hear from across the land....
