Essay / Utilitarianism - 748
Utilitarianism is an ethical theory proposed by Jeremy Bentham and defended by James Mill. The theory says that all activities should be directed toward achieving the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Utilitarianism is impractical and very unrealistic because it refuses to focus on the values, morals and happiness of individuals. Utilitarianism does not permit risking one's life for the sake of others and, in fact, rewards such behavior. Utilitarianism mentions that if a person's death saves many lives, then they are obligated to do so. Utilitarianism states that no friendship is more important than other friendships. This is worrying because it is not realistic, in the sense that it devalues relationships. Utilitarianism views friendship and love as an instrumental value and views friendship as a material. This theory makes many incorrect assumptions about how we view relationships. Our personal connection with our friends prevents us from achieving what is best for the common good, because our attachment to our friends is greater than the attachment we might have to someone we do not know. This is a problem because relationships are much more complicated than utilitarianism claims. It is difficult for people to put their needs and those of those they love toward the common good.
