Essay / The Medical Benefits of Marijuana - 1942
In 1988, Francis Young, an administrative law judge for the Drug Enforcement Administration, proclaimed: In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly consume. For example, eating 10 raw potatoes can cause a toxic reaction. By comparison, it's physically impossible to eat enough marijuana to cause death. Marijuana in its natural form is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man. By any measure of rational analysis, marijuana can be used safely in supervised routine medical care. This quote, spoken by a DEA government official, illustrates how much the scope of the safety and cure of marijuana, when used for medical purposes, has proven to be outdated. the years. Some people, although poorly educated and ignorant, believe that medicinal marijuana should not be decriminalized due to the presence of more potent drugs and its lack of consistency in research. Looking at patient stories and the long use of the plant, it is evident that medical cannabis has much more organic healing properties than pharmaceutical products. Although the legalization of marijuana, whether recreational or medicinal, is considered just one controversial topic among many, medical advances suggest the powerful therapeutic properties the plant has to offer. In order to fully understand the wide range of benefits that marijuana presents, it is essential to review its history. Dating back to the Old World, the history of marijuana use spans at least 4,000 years. Dating back to 2737 BC, “…the mystical emperor Shen Neng of China prescribed marijuana tea for the treatment of gout, rheumatism, malaria, and, oddly enough, memory problems” (Stack & Suddath, 2009 ). The popularity of marijuana has increased rapidly throughout...... middle of paper ...... but it is completely accepted, the drug is the only one that works well for him. Affirming the effectiveness of medical marijuana may provide hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel for patients who need this medication. Marijuana has proven itself to be a powerful and magical herb over centuries of use, research, cultivation and regulation. From insomnia to cancer, cannabis reinforces the idea that the natural remedy is sometimes more effective than the toxic and devastating drug for the body. The noise of opposing opinions has been drowned out by benefits being trumped, in many cases, by a better alternative. As satirist Bill Hicks and many others who question the irony of this topic have asked, "Why is marijuana illegal?" It grows naturally on our planet. Doesn't the idea of doing nature against the law seem a bit . . . unnatural?”
