Essay / Paragoning Janie Crawford from Their Eyes Were Watching...
The character, Janie Crawford, from the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God strikes a pose similar to Argentine political figure Eva Peron. The National Endowment for the Arts proclaims the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, as a narration of the main character, Janie Crawford, a girl, "growing from a vibrant but voiceless teenager to a woman with a finger on the trigger of her own destiny” (Koss). For any Argentinian citizen or anyone who has seen the musical and film adaptation “Evita”, this quote is accurate. Peron and Janie share common resemblances in patterns of inheritance, childhood development, and their eventual realization. Set in central Florida in the early 20th century, Their Eyes Were Watching God depicts Janie Crawford's coming of age under the harsh reality of racism. With a mixed heritage of black and white, Janie was virtually born into a hostile political, economic, and social environment. Unfortunately for Janie, her heritage invites disrespect from every man she meets. “There are years that ask questions and years that answer” (Hurston 97) says Janie to express the difficulty of making this image disappear. Political figure, Eva Peron, originally from the slums of Argentina, also struggles to gain the respect of men. Eva Duarte Peron, born May 7, 1919, spent her childhood in Junín, province of Argentina. Both women were born into places of abject poverty. Eva Peron struggled to gain the respect of the upper class when she was elected First Lady of Argentina. To some Argentine citizens, Eva Peron appeared as just another woman hungry for power. The reality is a lot like Janie Crawford's. Eva was looking for love. However, the irony of it all falls... middle of paper...... and fight and both women achieve their mission to find love. In conclusion, both comparisons, real and fictional, are similar. in the areas of inheritance, childhood development and of course their quest for true love. Eva and Janie both find love and die once their mission is accomplished. Works Cited Koss, Erika and David Kipen. “The great reading”. Their eyes looked at God. Np, and Web. May 2, 2014.
