  • Essay / Administrative Interview Report - 1131

Administrative Interview Report While completing this project, I interviewed Lt. Harris of the Hattiesburg Police Department. Lieutenant Harris has been on the force for approximately ten years and lieutenant for two years. He leads both the attack team and the net team for the Hattiesburg Police Department. Additionally, with his experience in law enforcement and leadership, I chose different questions that he could also understand and that were relevant to the class. The first question I asked Lieutenant Harris was: Did he consider himself a leader or a manager? Lt. Harris had an interesting answer and with the work he does every day, he is a leader and manager. He believed that in the position he holds within the police department, it is important to be a leader and a manager. Lt. Harris believed he needed to show the guys he supervises on the strike team and net that he could still get his hands dirty. He also said the job requires him to do both, depending on how the police department operates. He also admitted that his management skills are something he needs to improve and that he is currently in school to improve those skills. Analyzing Lt. Harris' response, I could tell that it was the response of someone who is continuing to learn the position in order to excel as a lieutenant in the Hattiesburg Police Department. Additionally, he is a lieutenant in a management and leadership role, but everything always happens according to how the police chief wants things to go. This particular leadership position as lieutenant can be difficult due to the department's operating structure. Additionally, Lt. Harris can lead his men who are part of the strike and net team, but he also looks over his head with...... middle of paper ...... his skills and with time will improve and he can achieve his main goal of being a police chief. He also believed that the process will have to take time and that he will discover its results as his career as an officer progresses. When I looked at this response, it is very clear that Lt. Harris takes his job seriously and understands the position he holds within the Hattiesburg Police Department. In most police department operations, one is in a level 1 or level 2 type environment, so it is difficult for others below the chief to improve their management skills. Managerial experience will improve over time. Additionally, the leader always has the final decisions, and it can be difficult for a lieutenant or sergeant to improve these skills, especially if they still take orders from the leader like the regular patrol. police officers.
