Essay / Reader Response: To Kill a Mockingbird - 1532
Chapter 1) Atticus was insinuating that there are other ways to kill people, like Mr. Bradley keeping his son locked in the house like that. He's not literally killed, but his emotional life is slowly diminishing. Chapter 2) Mrs. Fischer is a very strict and strange teacher, she prefers to teach the students herself rather than let their parents teach them. Fischer criticizes Scout for learning to read from Atticus, her father. The reasons for her dissatisfaction with teaching probably mean that she is probably alone and has had to relieve students' stress. Chapter 3) Atticus' wisdom is very apparent in this chapter. He wants Scout to do well in school and on page 41 he makes a deal with her. She will go to school and he will continue to read to her in the evening. Chapter 4) #1: Obviously Scout didn't want Jem and her family to get involved with the Radleys, but Boo Radley's complete fear is too great. for Scout, Jem, and Dill to get by, so it's probably best to stay out of it completely. Caplurnia and Atticus also gave some subtle hints to Scout and Jem to stay away from the Radley house as it would probably anger Mr. Radley.#2: Maycomb's life was described very well in this chapter. Everyone seems to know everyone, and this gives the townspeople a sense of closure. Life in the city seems similar to every other stereotypical southern city. Maycomb is a great place to live, but it is not without its problems and population issues. However, the way it all works together is something unique. Chapter 5) #1: Miss Maudie is one of the oldest ladies in town. She often likes to end insults with words or phrases appropriate to the situation. Mrs. Maudie is very trustworthy and religious...... middle of paper ......nher trial. When she says "There are good but misguided people in this town", she is obviously referring to Atticus. Even though he seems completely invulnerable to the town, he is still considered a Mockingbird in the sense that he is truly passionate about his cause against the Ewells in this case. After Merriweather makes this statement, she immediately regrets it and implies that she herself is not a good person to oppose Tom Robinson. Miss Maudie is just there to enforce that opinion.#2) This relationship improves in chapter 24. Scout finally understands her purpose and why she stands by Atticus. Scout discovers the "devil" side of the Christian ladies of Maycomb and understands more about her aunt. Now, when Scout receives an order from him, she respects it; like she does with Atticus. Chapter 26) During the 3rd year scene.
