Content Area InstructionEnglish learners in the United States face multiple challenges in achieving academic success. In order to successfully complete a task, they must master both English as a language and how it is used in core content courses. Therefore, teachers must implement different teaching approaches and methods across content areas in order to help ELL students. These methods include content-enriched English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching, Cognitive Academic Linguistics Approach (CALLA), and gated content teaching. Content-based or enriched ESL teaching is an approach that empowers second language learners with content and language instruction. In this approach, students are exposed to a considerable amount of English through motivating content. Students learn useful language embedded in a relevant context rather than as isolated language. This approach attempts to prepare students to acquire the language while using the context of any subject, so that students learn the language by using it in a specific context rather than learning it in isolation. This approach is used for children and adults in school settings or in classes for students learning English for a specific purpose. The Cognitive Academic Language Approach (CALLA) is an approach that integrates academic language development, content instruction, and "explicit instruction in learning strategies that can help students memorize both content and language”. (Chamot and O’Malley, 1996, p.263). This model promotes reflection in language classes, because students must think critically and be active in their learning. CALLA is designed for limited English...... middle of paper ...... oach is used across content areas, and students work in cooperative, linguistically heterogeneous groups to promote language development and l learning content. This model focuses on content learning, but the use of scaffolding techniques helps promote language acquisition because students are exposed to the L2 in meaningful contexts. I think implementing all of these approaches is possible in my classroom because most of my students are language learners. So they need all the support to acquire the English language through content learning. If students are motivated and engaged in their learning, they can acquire the L2.ReferencesChamot, AU, & O'Malley, JM (1996).
