The king is again described as a horrible ruler because "he plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burned our cities, and destroyed the lives of our people » (805). “Pillaged our coast” means stealing property from a place or person giving the image of the king stealing inalienable rights from the American people. This also creates the image of the king taking away people's rights to emigrate to America because he created more laws and regulations. The word "ravaged" connotes that the king is cruel and unjust, creating a visual image of the king being some sort of animal that attacks. “Ravage our coast” refers to destroyed settlements where settlers lose their property, etc. “Burned Our Cities” produces an image of cities in ruins after a fire leaves the settler with nothing. “Destroyed the lives of our people” means that the king ruins people's lives by taking away their freedom and makes the people of America unhappy by destroying things like “ravaged our coast” and “burned our cities”. “Our people” means that the American people are not part of the British because Jefferson refers to them as “our” and the people are part of the new government that is being created.
