    What exactly is “illiteracy”? Is it this common theme within the community that places certain individuals in a certain group? Does this represent kids who “didn’t try” hard enough in school? Does it represent minorities in difficulty in the communities? For many people, this is an all-too-common problem that isn't given attention over the course of a day, a week, or even a month. We spend time obsessing about people with AIDS, but we have more pressing problems than that. Illiteracy is a common problem that is linked to economic, financial, life, understanding and many other different types. The one associated with the word, the majority of the time, is comprehension illiteracy. This means that you cannot read or write, regardless of your situation. It’s not about “representing” a group of people, but rather representing a social problem. This is a global epidemic that we ignore. In America we have over 79 different organizations. We tend not to see the bigger picture because it's not our fault, but the media's fault for not covering it. The federal government had little awareness that it was creating a problem. Illiteracy can affect life in many different ways: not being able to sign forms or see a doctor, always facing a financial burden, not being able to understand social cues and how to behave in public , and not knowing how to read and write. 1 in 7 people will not be able to read this newspaper. There are solutions, but not all of them are 100% accepted. On 28, 2014, I delved into the subject of illiteracy. I started asking my peers around me to see what they knew. I quickly discovered that I was receiving a multitude of blank stares, shocked faces and, for the most part, no response.
