  • Essay / Analysis of Aristotle's Account of Friendship - 2723

    1) On the other hand, I think people can survive without friendship if that's what they want. What I'm trying to get across is that friendship is a choice, you can choose to be in one of three types of friendship or you can choose to live without friendship. The reason I think friendship is a choice rather than a necessary accomplishment is because some people are more attracted to living alone and the fact that some people shouldn't have friendships because they abuse it. “The parent seems by nature to feel this way for his offspring and his offspring for his parent, not only among men but also among birds and among most animals.” (Aristotle, 2014, p. 1) Aristotle points out that men, like animals, need a certain form of friendship, but there are animals who live alone. Take a bear for example, they go off alone and live alone until they find a partner and begin the third type of friendship expressed by Aristotle. Yes, in the end they find friendship, but it shows that animals and people are capable of living alone and supporting themselves until they make the choice to enter into some sort of friendship. People are able to settle into nature and live on their own, they are creatures of choice. We make choices every day and if one of those choices is to move into the wilderness and never form a friendship, that person will be able to adapt to that lifestyle because it is one of the greatest defense mechanisms a human being can have.
