He began to become defensive and ignorant towards his friends and the people of Scotland. He felt very threatened by Banquo and his future line of children because of what the witches had told them. Macbeth sent murderers to kill Banquo on the evening of the feast and once they had killed him, Macbeth states: "Here the honor of our country was now covered, if the gracious person of our Banquo were present, what can I rather challenge for wickedness than pity misfortuneā€¯ (Macbeth 3.4.41-44) Macbeth begins to see Banquo's ghost and fears what his afterlife will be. Macbeth fears that he sold his soul to the devil so that Banquo's line would become king. Macbeth began to worry less about his earthly consequences. He knew he was outnumbered but he was still confident because of the witch's appearances. Macbeth was confident because the three apparitions seemed impossible and he believed that no one could harm him. He was too arrogant to never realize that apparitions could possibly happen. Macbeth's overconfidence finally got the better of him. He began to think he was invincible against everyone else.
