Essay / William Irvine's A Guide To The Good Life - 2074
The number one goal humans want to achieve before they are on their deathbed is to have a good life. They do not want to think about having achieved their goal before they perish in their state of death. To achieve life and achieve joy, you must have a philosophy to follow throughout your life. “The goal of philosophy in the ancient Greek world was not just life, but living a good life….[the good life] has important implications for what we do” (Swift 5). Everything we do in life, everything is based on our goal that we want to achieve. Every path you take and every choice you make leads you to try to get closer to your goal. Whose goal will lead you to have a good life. Additionally, having a philosophy makes it easier to make decisions about yourself. You already know what goal you want to achieve. So you choose the path that can help you achieve this goal. Choosing without having a philosophy makes things even more difficult because we would be even more indecisive. Irvine agrees with this notion: “…having a philosophy of life, whether it is Stoicism or another philosophy, can greatly simplify daily life” (Irvine 203). In William Irvines A Guide to the Good Life he mentions Stoicism and how this philosophy is a perfect model of philosophy and that we should follow it. But he also mentions that it's essential to have a philosophy to begin with. Following a philosophy is the main point of life and without it you are lost. Therefore, to live, you must follow a strict philosophy based on your own ideals and values. My argument is that there is not one consistent philosophy that you have to follow, you should be able to choose different parts from the middle of paper......to achieve this goal in which their philosophy is brought to them. The philosophy that suits you best is yours. This has been done for thousands of years, where people have created their own philosophy. This was done with the help of philosophers and schools and can still be done today with our resources. You can always look at the documentation to understand past philosophies and use it in yours. Additionally, you can use and implement some of the basics of your religion into your own philosophy depending on whether you are actually going to follow it or not. Everyone's philosophy should be like a puzzle or a crucible; everyone believes in the same things but also in different things. You want your philosophy to be consistent, understandable when you're stuck, and something you'll die for. Otherwise, there is no point in living a life without a specific philosophy.
