  • Essay / Introduction to Cloud Computing - 796

IntroductionCloud computing is an emerging strategy that could create millions of jobs while allowing businesses to become more profitable. How does Cloud Computing work? The basis of Cloud Computing is having data, software, platforms or networks stored and executed by an external source and then streaming the output to your electronic device. (McKendrick, J. March 3, 2012) In this article, I will discuss the following three topics: the history and basics of Cloud Computing, the three main characteristics of Cloud Computing, and the three types of networks used in Cloud Computing. History Although cloud computing has become a recent trend, it has actually been around for a long time. The idea began to take shape in the 1960s with Arpanet and John McCarthy. The idea was virtually dormant until the 1990s, when telecommunications companies switched from point-to-point data circuits to VPNs (virtual private networks). Using VPN, telecommunications companies were able to balance their network load and become more efficient. In 1997, Ramnath Chellappa defined Cloud Computing as we know it today. He said it is a "computing paradigm in which the limits of computing will be determined by economic reasons rather than technical limits alone." Salesforce.com is best known for its first leap into cloud computing in 1999, offering enterprise applications through its website. Amazon was the next company to use Cloud Computing by offering web services in 2002. (Sourya, 2011) Cloud ComputingCloud Computing is an exciting concept because it can do much more than just run and distribute your data from one place to another. Its success lies in its flexibility to meet the needs of each business. Cloud computing is generally divided into three main categories: middle of paper ......the cost savings, simplicity and flexibility offered. Looking to the future, Cloud Computing is expected to grow and provide millions of jobs while making businesses more efficient. Works CitedMcKendrick, J.
