Essay / Nature versus Nurture in Truman Cold-Blooded Hood
Sometimes people commit crimes and they never have a reason why they did it. There are two types of environmentally determined human behavior, either shaped by experiences during a person's lifetime or by a person's genes; also known as nature or nurture. Nature refers to the genetic material that a person inherits from their parents. Education refers to experiences acquired throughout life. For example, have you been loved, abused or neglected? Throughout the story of Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood", the reader discovers what kind of people Richard Hickock and Perry Smith really are. These men brutally killed four members of the Clutter family after robbing them. This essay will discuss the nature versus nurture debate using the example of this story. Say no to plagiarism. Richard Eugene "Dick" Hickock and Perry Edward Smith were in prison when they learned from another prisoner, known as Floyd Wells, that Herb Clutter (father) was very wealthy and had money hidden in a safe in his house. Floyd had previously worked for the Clutter family. After Hickock and Smith were released from prison on parole, they hatched a plan to get their hands on the hidden money. Once they arrived at Clutter's house, just outside Holcomb, Kansas, they realized there was no safe containing any money, so they woke Herb Clutter. Mr. Clutter gave them what little money he had and told them he didn't have any more. They woke up the other three members of the family and ransacked the rest of the house, taking only about fifty dollars, a pair of binoculars and a transistor radio. Once they had everything they could find, Dick and Perry executed the four family members in cold blood. When officers arrived, Herb Clutter, 48, was lying slumped on a mattress in the basement, stabbed, with his throat slashed and a shotgun to his head. He was wearing pajamas, his hands were tied and his mouth was taped shut. On a couch in an adjacent room was 15-year-old Kenyon Neal Clutter. He was tied up, gagged and shot in the head. In separate bedrooms upstairs were the bodies of Ms. Bonnie Mae Clutter, 45, and Nancy Mae Clutter, 16. Ms. Clutter was bound and gagged. Nancy was only tied. Both mother and daughter were shot in the head. Dick's character is portrayed as the villain motivator of crime. Since he didn't have a very troubled childhood, it was often referred to that Dick was a criminal because it was in his nature. His kind childhood was brought up several times, he even made statements about how kind his family was to him. Unlike Perry, there is little sympathy created for Dick's character since there was little reason to sympathize. “The glory of having everyone at his mercy, that’s what excited him.” This is a statement Perry made about Dick. This explains how Dick enjoys the feeling of power he gets from threatening people and committing crimes. It is Dick's nature to want to subject others to his own will. As was stated when the couple was in Florida: "Why should that fat bastard have all the luck?" With a knife in his hand, he, Dick, had the power. These big bastards would..
