A lazy or reluctant genius may have all the answers in his head, but they are of no use if no one knows them or cares. – UnknownWHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?According to Daniel Goleman, emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize our own feelings and those of others, to motivate ourselves and to manage our emotions well within ourselves and in our relationships . Emotional intelligence can be summarized to include self-awareness, self-control, motivation, recognizing emotions in others, and relationship management. Emotional intelligence can become a skill when skills, knowledge and attitude are integrated. The result of emotional intelligence in the workplace is exceptional performance – emotional competence counts 2x more than IQ and technical skills combined. Goleman's emotional intelligence framework has four main focuses, summarized in the image below. Personal Competence The two factors of personal competence, namely self-awareness and self-management determine how we manage ourselves. Self-awareness consists of knowing one's internal states, preferences, resources and intuitions. Self-awareness includes emotional awareness (recognizing one's emotions and their effects), accurate self-assessment (knowing one's strengths and limitations), and self-confidence (a strong sense of one's own worth and abilities). Self-management, on the other hand, consists of managing one's internal states, impulses and resources. Managers do not realize the importance of employees' psychological level and how it affects performance. Finally, it is difficult to address the issue of emotional intelligence. Even when managers apply emotional intelligence in the workplace, it is difficult to resolve an emotional intelligence problem that can be identified in the workplace because it is usually personal.
