Essay / Essay on Incarceration - 1914
Incarceration has not always been the primary form of “punishment” when it comes to committing injustice to society. In fact, in the early 1600s, common forms of punishment for doing wrong in society included social rejection, corporal punishment, forced labor, and more. (“History of Prisons”). It was not until the 18th century that it was determined that incarceration could actually be a form of punishment correlated with a set amount of time an individual had to serve time based on the severity of their actions. The logic behind incarceration is to restrict a person's freedom as retaliation for the crime he or she has committed (Prison History.") Prisons established in the 18th century gained their recognition because of their purposes high levels of improvement in society. But the truth is that as people focused on improving society, prisons quickly became overcrowded, dirty, and above all, dangerous. By the end of the 19th century, more and more people had become aware of poor prison conditions, leading to a "reform" movement. The reform movement was established as a means of rehabilitating prisoners (“Prison History”). Prisons would now offer programs to transform inmates into model citizens by providing counseling, education and opportunities to learn the skills needed to work in a civilian world. . However, with the increasing number of inmates each year, prisons always become overcrowded. Because prisons are so overcrowded that there are not enough resources devoted to rehabilitating inmates and reintegrating them into society so that they can survive in the civilian world once released from prison ("History of prisons"). One might think that prisons are intended for the sole purpose of incarceration and punishment...... middle of paper ......es. The Justice Department should push for a larger budget to maintain order in prisons. With a larger budget, the Justice Department could build new prisons or expand existing ones. Expanding prisons would go a long way toward solving the problem of overcrowding. If there was a larger budget for expansion, inmates would have more opportunities to receive the services they need to successfully reenter the civilian world. Prisons would also become safer with the addition of space inside prisons. Inmates would be less likely to get into fights due to lack of space or privacy. The invasion of privacy would become less of a problem since there would be more space to share between inmates. With more space to share, inmates may be allowed to spend more time in recreation and education centers inside the prison..
