  • Essay / Hypocrisy of imperialism at the heart of Joseph Conrad...

It's very intriguing and for the audience it's very important because as we move forward in the story and see how Kurtz is gone really crazy, we can see the theme of madness displayed. On page 28 of Heart of Darkness, we discover that Kurtz came to the Congo to set up stations that would serve to improve the morality of the natives (Conrad). Unfortunately, the natives started treating Kurtz like some kind of god and this got to his head and he was smart enough to use this to his advantage, leading him to go crazy. As he gets closer to Kurtz Station and becomes intrigued by Kurtz as a person, Marlow begins to realize that Kurtz is not inherently evil. He admires him almost as much as he disagrees with the decisions he made.
