At the beginning of the play “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, Macbeth highlights a heroic character. Conversely, when the reader is introduced to Lady Macbeth, they learn that Macbeth may not be the heroic person he may seem. The way Lady Macbeth describes Macbeth seems to be a coward and not as heroic as he had been taught before in the house. As the play progresses, Macbeth is no longer a heroic character and Lady Macbeth is no longer as ruthless as she was at the beginning of the play. In the play “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, written by William Shakespeare, two of the main characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, experience a role reversal. An example of Macbeth's heroism is found in Act One, Scene Two. Macbeth demonstrated courage, strength, and cruelty on the battlefield. An example of his bravery is "Doubtful he was like two weary swimmers who cling together and choke their art...... For brave Macbeth he well deserves the name - Disdaining, fortune, with his steel brandished, With his smocks of bloody execution, Like a valorous servant who traced his way till he faced the slave that he never shook hands, nor did he; said no good, until he had unseasoned him from the nave to the chops, and fixed his head on our battlements” (1.2.8- 23) At a time when everything seemed difficult for the Scotland, Macbeth was heroic on the battlefield and did not hesitate to show courage and strength.
