Essay / Alice Walker Daily Use - 1160
Heritage is something that people see in different ways. When many people think of heritage, they think of past generations and where their family came from. Other people place their inheritance on the value of things, like old leaves made from something sentimental. In Everyday Use, this is exactly how Maggie views heritage. She wants the handmade scraps from her grandmother's dresses because to her, it's a sign of her heritage. Alice Walker's story is heritage based. The narrator of the story has two daughters who couldn't be more different. One girl, Dee, is beautiful and cares a lot about finding her place in the world and about fashion. Maggie, on the other hand, is very practical. She sees no reason to be fashionable and is okay with her place in this world. It's because she's like her mother. Her mother had to work very hard to provide for her daughters. She prefers hard work and is proud of what she is able to do. When Maggie returns to visit, she brings her abnormal husband with her. She changed her name and suddenly cares a lot about her heritage. She keeps asking to take things that she has known have been in the family for a while. Her mother is okay with this until she tries to take the quilts she already gave Maggie as a wedding present. This is the last straw for her mother and she tells Dee no, which makes Dee angry because she knows Maggie will actually use the covers and they will fall apart in a few years. Dee leaves in anger, then Maggie and her mother move on with their lives. It is a very effective story because it shows two very different points of view, creates entertaining characters, and has a powerful message ... middle of paper ... Alker's story is that education sets people apart , somehow. like a caste system. For Maggie and her mother, it was normal to continue living as she had always been because they didn't know, or know, anything different. To Dee, the simple life her family led seemed sad and simple because she had experienced and learned many new and different things. Works Cited Austen, Jane. Pride and prejudice.
