  • Essay / Environmental Effects of Heavy Metal Pollution

Modern civilization is entirely dependent on a fairly large collection of metals considering all aspects of our daily lives. There is a long-standing historical connection between metals and human development. It is evident that heavy metal pollution not only has an effect on the production as well as the quality of crops but consequently influences the nature of the atmosphere as well as water bodies, leading to a threat for the health and life of animals in addition to that of humans. beings. Almost any material is certain to produce leachate if water is allowed to saturate it. The nature of the leachate is determined primarily by the composition and solubility of the waste components. For example, if the composition of waste changes due to weathering or biodegradation, the quality of the leachate will change over time. This is mainly the case in most municipal landfills containing municipal waste. The primary routes of human exposure to soil metals are ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. Since soil is the main sink for airborne metals, corresponding measurement of their levels in this environment is beneficial for establishing trends in abundance and their consequences due to natural and anthropogenic changes. Environmental pollution by heavy metals is a growing global concern (Environmental Resources Management, 2000; De Miguel et al., 2007; Mielke et al., 2010). Global population growth, high standards of living, increasing urbanization, as well as rapid technological developments have all contributed to an increase in both the quantity and variety of solid waste generated (Zurbrugg, 2002; Chen , 2010). These generated wastes need to be disposed of from time to time....... middle of paper ......this and the levels of potentially toxic heavy metal elements in the soils around the solid waste disposal site from the town of Lichtenburg, North Western Province, South Africa. Here are the objectives of the study1. Determine the presence and levels of heavy metals, i.e. Cd, Pb Hg Cu, Fe, Cr, in the soil around the selected solid waste disposal.2. Compare the determined concentrations to the recommended concentrations in order to assess environmental risks.1.7 Location of the study areaThe study will be carried out in Lichtenburg, North West province, South Africa in the two main landfills that exist in this city . Of the two landfills, one is a landfill which has since been closed and is located on the outskirts of the town while the new active landfill is located along the Ventorsdorp – Mafikeng highway in the North West Province, in South Africa..
