The way a society is organized can create conflict or create difficult conditions for others to survive, which can increase the chances of conflict between different cultures and societies. The arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 marked the beginning of an era of conflict. Aboriginal people have lived in Australia for thousands of years. When the British arrived in Australia, they did not understand the way of life of the indigenous peoples and did not realize the deep connection they had with the land. Non-Indigenous people began to use the land in their own way because Australia was seen as unused, leading to a concept of Terra Nullius (the land belongs to no one or the land does not belong to anyone) . The new white settlement had a devastating impact on the indigenous people. Large numbers of Aboriginal people died after being involved in devastating conflicts with modern settlers and exposure to disease also contributed to the number of deaths. The native population in 1788 was 1,000,000 (estimate) and by 1900 it had been reduced to 60,000 and there was a threat that this breed would soon become extinct. The ignorance of white people in the past had the effect of creating more difficulties for the survival of Aboriginal people. The principle of an eye for an eye means that a person who harmed another person will receive the same treatment, but describing the revenge taken by white people against native people may be more than an eye. The murder of a European in Washington state in 1926 led to the murder of 30 Native people in revenge. Likewise, another European death resulted in the deaths of approximately 70 natives. The concept of Terra Nullius led to the destruction of indigenous culture and the way indigenous people used the land was not appreciated by white settlers. ...... middle of document ......d so that justice is done. “No issue… is more important to Australia than resolving the relationship between Indigenous people and non-Indigenous communities.” We have spent 205 years either pretending there are no problems to solve or trying to solve them according to non-Native ideas of what is best,” a very true statement by Garth Neitteim (quoted in Botley 1994). very true statement that describes the ignorance of white people in the past. The new settlers did what they wanted without worrying about the consequences on indigenous society. But now we have taken the responsibility to shape a better future for the indigenous people and by simply apologizing for the past, we cannot undo the serious losses suffered by the indigenous community, but we can now stand with them and create an environment where equality and justice are possible. surrounded them.
