Early in my studies, I came across a book illustrating the different types of eyes in the animal kingdom and in humans. I found it intriguing how vision is adapted based on the needs of each species. Growing up, I wondered how optical illusions were so confusing, causing color blindness and the structure of the eye that allows sight. After watching my late grandmother suffer from multiple eye problems, including retinal detachment, cataracts, and glaucoma, my attention shifted to eye health. I was deeply discouraged by his life-changing living conditions that made simple daily tasks difficult; This, coupled with my curiosity about the complex workings of the eye, inspired me to study optometry. Science has always fascinated me. I love exploring and understanding how science is applied in the real world. Learning biology gives me insight into the interconnectedness of body systems; the ongoing responses of the eye to different intensities of light and pressure and the effects of bodily diseases on cells and organs. I particularly enjoy practicing chemistry. I love the connection between theory and observations through experiments, as well as the discipline involved in properly handling chemicals and devices.
