MATH EVENT Fields Medal – 1936In 1936, the first Fields Medal was awarded to Lars Ahlfors and Jesse Douglas. The medal was officially known as the International Medal for Outstanding Discoveries in Mathematics. This medal is awarded to mathematicians under the age of forty and there can be two to four recipients of the medal. This medal and the Abel Prize are called "the Nobel Prizes of mathematicians". Previously, mathematicians did not have a major award like the Nobel Prize, because it was created by the will of the Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel, who was not "particularly interested in mathematics or theoretical sciences." A meeting takes place every four years to decide on new recipients of the medal. The first two recipients of the medal, as noted above, were Finnish mathematician Lars Ahlfors and American mathematician Jesse Douglas.SCIENTIFIC EVENTThe Soviet Union launches Sputnik – October 4, 1957History changed with the launch of Sputnik. It was the world's first artificial satellite and was about the size of a beach ball, but weighed more than 183 pounds. Following the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik, a "space race" was launched between the United States and the Soviet Union. The American public was surprised by the launch of Sputnik, particularly that the Soviet Union was the first to launch a satellite. On January 31, 1958, the United States responded by launching Explorer I. The Explorer I satellite carried scientific data that ultimately led to the discovery of the magnetic radiation belts around the Earth. The Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik also led the United States to create the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Ginger was so young at the time that she probably had no memory of this event. The Titanic was such a sad story and this makes it even worse because it could have been avoided. The crew did not fill all the lifeboats to capacity, resulting in a large loss of life. The ship known as the “Unsinkable Ship” sank on its maiden voyage. Molly Brown, on the other hand, a passenger who survived the sinking of the Titanic, became known as the Unsinkable Molly Brown. The name was given to her because she helped fill the lifeboats and still managed to survive herself. Later in Ginger's career, she participated in the musical "The Unsinkable Molly Brown ».”.
