The Internet Past, Present and FutureIntroductionThis report describes the history of the Internet. The report shows how the Internet was created and describes the progress the Internet has made over the years. The world just got smaller The Internet isn't as new as you might think; Today's "information super highway" began in the 1960s as a collection of converging paths. Many people consider the ARPAnet (the first computer network designed by the Advances Research Projects Agency) to be the starting point for the Internet we all know and love today, but that's not entirely true . It would be more accurate to say that the Internet was born from a number of indigenous technologies, which began as ARPAnet and then grew over the next thirty years into what it is today . Huge changes have taken place in the development of the Internet since its beginnings in the 1960s, revolutionizing the way people communicate and do business. “Internet,” as defined by the Microsoft® Encarta® Encyclopedia 97, is “the interconnection of computer networks that allows machines to be connected to communicate directly. The term generally refers to a particular global interconnection of government, educational, and commercial computer networks that is publicly accessible. There are also smaller Internet networks, usually for the private use of a single organization, called intranets. The fact that the Internet was created was a big surprise to the biggest leaders in computer technology. IBM President Thomas J. Watson said, “There is a world market for about five computers,” in 1943. When Watson made this statement, he was absolutely correct. At the time, computers were not very practical, they were large, difficult to maintain and extremely expensive, the idea of linking these things together was unthinkable. Sputnik 1Sputnik was a major breakthrough, launching this piece of metal in orbit; the Soviet Union proved its dominance in the field of space technology. It also demonstrated that they had the capability to launch a nuclear warhead from anywhere in the world, anywhere in the United States, wherever they wanted. Leaders said “everything was under threat” and a defensive response was seriously needed. The solution became visible to computer engineers, they must come up with a communication system that would not fail even if sections of it...... middle of paper ...... the boundaries of Ry. Even if such global control were possible, international standards of ethics and behavior would first have to be determined. The Facts Today the Internet is bigger than ever, four websites are created every second, traditional mail is being replaced by email, businesses are distributing fewer resources. brochures and paper and dissemination of information on the Internet, etc. The public is connecting in record numbers: around 75,000 users connect to the Internet every day. As of early 1996, more than 25 million computers were interconnected to the Internet in more than 180 countries, and this figure continues to increase at an extraordinary rate. It is expected that 300 million users will join the Internet in the next three years! RealVideo and MP3s provide consumers with excellent multimedia. The war continues between Microsoft and AOL (the new owners of Netscape) over who can provide users with the richest browsing experience possible. The Internet has grown significantly over the past 30 years. The Internet is now growing ?
