Essay / Professional Development as a Teacher: Personal Reflection
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people might think. Being a teacher does not only imply knowing the subject to be taught, it also implies being willing to constantly and comprehensively improve oneself, as well as to update the resources and materials that one uses in teaching. Think and analyze again and again the best way to teach to learn and how to get students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spent in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, revise students' homework and exams, as well as all the administrative requirements that one must cover, regardless of the institution in which we work. In addition to all this, a good, professional teacher will need to find the time to continue preparing to improve. During these two weeks, we were reminded of our own way of learning and why we became a teacher: it is by coincidence, because of the circumstances of life, perhaps because of the family tradition, was it a conscious decision or because someone influenced us? Whatever the answer, we need to face reality and be aware that being a teacher is not just about teaching a lesson and assessing student learning. This requires playing the different roles that a teacher must play whenever our learners need it, identifying the needs and preferences of our students, respecting their integrity and individuality, but influencing and motivating them to improve and become independent. Currently, I teach adults in a business environment, although it hasn't always been this way. I have had the chance to teach people of all ages in different conditions and circumstances. It is worth mentioning that most of what I know now was acquired through practice and experiences in the middle of an article......to exchange ideas and clarify my doubts or problems. I have to contain myself to be able to speak as much as possible in some classes, overcome laziness to analyze the outcome of an activity or class, and think of better ways to do things when they don't work out the way I thought. . To conclude, I am aware that the only one responsible for my learning is me. “Teacher training or education is something that can be handled by others; Teacher development is something that can only be done by oneself and for oneself” Wallace, 1991.
