In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare and the film version of Hamlet by Franco Zeffirelli, there are apparent differences between the presentation of the theme of death. A key difference between the play and the film is how each medium presents the character's death. In turn, this changes the audience's perspective on the characters and their traits. However, in the film, Gertrude's character's facial expression seems to know that the drink is poisoned, as if she is sacrificing herself for Hamlet, thus illustrating her maternal instinct.
