O., & Burke, P.J. (2009). Lost in the mix: the culture of homeless teens. Pediatric Nursing, 35(3), 154-161. This source is an ethnographic study aimed at exploring the culture of youth homelessness. Study data were obtained from nineteen homeless adolescents in the northeastern United States. Oliveira and Burke (2009) identified some of the cultural characteristics of homeless youth, including material possessions such as musical instruments and equipment, relationships with other homeless people to create a street family, drug selling and begging as well as street language. They found that the decision to make the streets their home was a rational option to avoid remaining in an unsafe and unsafe home environment. This study provides insight into homeless culture. This source is relevant to the topic of space and culture of homelessness because it provides information on the factors that push homeless youth to choose the street as their space and home, as well as information on the culture of homelessness.
