  • Essay / The Chesapeake Region and the New England Colonies

The Chesapeake Region and the New England Colonies differed greatly in the development of their two distinct societies. The Chesapeake region was a loosely structured society with few ties to each plantation, while the New England colonies had close-knit communities with a kind of urban pride. The difference in unity and the reason for this difference best explain the significant disparity between dissimilar societies. The New England and Chesapeake region had evolved into two different societies because the world was changing and many people did not like the change that was occurring. was happening so they left. For example, the Church of England was said to be corrupt. This is one of the main reasons for the separatists. They didn't like the rules and regulations of the church and wanted to leave. Many people believed that as a reward for their faith, God would give the person salvation. This is not what the Anglican Church thought. Martian Luther claimed that the Bible recognized only two sacraments, baptism and communism, and not the seven sacraments authorized by the Catholic Church. Another reason for leaving England was to get rich. To achieve this, one could participate in the fur trade, gold mining and even farming and fishing. Although there were separatists, there were also puritans. The Puritans were there to propagate the Church of England and build colonies for the king. Many people remained loyal to the king even when he was more than three thousand miles away. John Winthrop was the Puritan leader in 1680. He wanted everyone to live in peace and everyone to work as one. If that happened, everyone would be watching them. The disparity in social development comes from the type of people sent to each region. Most single men were sent to the Chesapeake colonies in search of wealth (Document F). There were a few women; however, not enough to truly produce heirs and a great next generation. In New England, by contrast, families of four, five, or six members arrived together (Document B). With New England families, new generations were sure to come and a closer unity within the family would arise. When the New England families came to their colonies, they made a strong and solid compact among themselves (Document D) while the English who settled in Virginia and others were there only to satisfy their infinite greed (D...... middle of paper......ginia, the governor of Berkeley, was afraid to be subtle in asking for British troops to help repel Dutch attacks ( Document G). Residents of the Chesapeake Colonies were unhappy with the wealthy aristocrats who led Francis Bacon led a revolt in Virginia against Governor Berkeley.
