As the striking similarities between the 1984 totalitarian government and the communist regime of North Korea show, it really is as if Kim Il Sung had obtained an early 1984 copy of George Orwell and used it as a model for his system (Hitchens np). George Orwell had been exposed to various types of imperialism throughout his life, which led him to become aware of his resentment towards authority. Orwell produced the novel with the aim of warning future societies of the dangers of totalitarian governments, but North Korea embodies a perfect depiction of the very authority Orwell aspired to avoid by providing a detailed illustration of the ramifications of subjugation to a tyrannical government (Merriman np). George Orwell's 1984 totalitarian dystopia included the use of intrusive surveillance mechanisms, indoctrinating propaganda, and distorted nationalism to repress its citizens. Likewise, the communist regime of North Korea closely resembles this society in the oppression of its people. Several methods of surveillance allow the totalitarian government of 1984 to perpetually oppress its citizens according to its will. They use the telescreen, a device that allows the Party to monitor and regulate people's actions at all times: it was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when in a public place or within range of a telescreen . The slightest thing could betray you. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of mumbling to himself, anything that carried with it the suggestion of an abnormality, of having something to hide.
