Essay / Militirism Document - 1165
When America declares war on another country, the conflict is depicted as a movie or a big game. Pro-war Americans like the idea of wars being seen as this. Sports, music and people very proud of their country seek major profits in the militarization of war. The people of the country we are in conflict with are usually the ones who suffer from militarism. Military families who paid the ultimate price and spouses who are left alone with their children also suffer. Justification is hard to find when people are dying, our country is losing money on a war that solves nothing. Sports benefit greatly from militarization. The Marines released a recruiting video showing an obstacle course with a Marine in a gauntlet. The Marine was wearing a football helmet and performing an activity similar to a football drill. When I saw this, I was attracted to the fact that the Marines were participating in football drills. If a former or current football player saw this ad, they would probably be interested in the Marines. World War II general and U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower said that “the true mission of American sports is to prepare young people for war” (Martin, Steuter 132). Sport allows young people to compete easily. By being part of a team, you become closer to your teammates. In the army, your soldiers are the only ones who will be there for you in combat, just like a team against another team. Every time a game is played in America, the Star Spangle Bannered is chanted. It makes us feel that pride in our country is obligatory. Football is the sport that most closely resembles military sport. Spring and summer training camp, ...... middle of paper ...... a feeling that this is what the soldiers signed up for and they made the decision to sacrifice for their country. We can and cannot justify militarism, it is based primarily on opinion. Many aspects of American culture benefit from the militarization of war. Our sports benefit from the militarization of American culture, music and patriotism. Militarization can be a good or bad thing in our culture. We also suffer from war efforts and militarism. We are not the only ones to suffer from militarist events. Militarism affects our daily lives with the promotions and recruitment announcements we receive every day from the military. Death takes suffering to another level. Considering the impact of war on the people of our country and other countries, it is difficult to justify militarism. Justification is based on opinion. The militarization of the United States is a very varied subject.
