  • Essay / Method of micropropagation of tomato plants - 1491

As discussed by Taylor (1986), tomato is a type of plant in the Solanaceae family. There are many species of tomatoes around the world. Tomato is not easy to plant in Malaysia and it is also very important as a food for citizens. This tomato plant is easy to grow in a moderate temperature region and originally originated from the dry west coast of tropical South America (Cooper, 1972). According to Picken, Stewart and Klapwijk (1986), there are several techniques for growing tomato plants which involve first planting the tomato in the ground or planting it in a planting medium in the planting house. Nowadays, tomato is a very important vegetable all over the world. The success of the tomato plant is based on the uniqueness of this plant itself and the tomato can be divided into two parts: the tomato market and the canned tomato. Recently, tomato cultivation involves economic activity such as import and export due to the higher demand for fresh tomatoes and canned tomatoes (Wener, n.d.). We can determine the tomato variety based on its size and shape. In Malaysia, cherry tomato is very popular among citizens because it has good aroma and unique shape. Nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium are very important for the successful growth and development of tomato plants. In addition, the height, leaf area and growth of the flower must be in good relationship with the quality of fertilization techniques and the quantity of nitrogen nutrients (Adams, 1986). After that, in sandy conditions, when the potassium concentration level increases, it will give good results for the growth and development of tomato plants in addition to flowering development (Adams, 1986).
