Devoted Father (An Analysis of the Devoted Son) In “A Devoted Son” by Anita Desai, there is a great conflict that has arisen throughout the History, this conflict is the idea of change. This story begins with a boy around high school age who has just discovered that on a placement test he got the highest score in his class, which then earned him a place to go to school in the United States. The greatness that is shown about their culture is how Rakesh immediately goes, and even though he is destined to be more important and have a higher status than his father, he still remembers where he came from and comes to kiss his father's feet. After going to the United States to study, he returns, surprising the rest of his family, because he did not return with a wife, like most boys of his status. He comes to show another respect, by marrying the woman that his mother had already chosen for him before his adventure. By opening his own clinic, he soon became a very famous doctor, famous and now known throughout his country. But he always comes to his father's bedside and kisses his feet like a good, respectable son. Soon his mother dies and everyone starts to age. His father soon falls ill and his son again comes to his rescue and starts taking care of his sick father. Rakesh begins to control the daily life of his father who rebels very aggressively and acts to attract his son's attention. Eventually, in the conflict of the story, the role of who cares for whom suddenly changes. The son begins to view his father as superior instead of him, he begins to think otherwise and act in a way that annoys his father.
